Following an attack on Asian youth at a South Philadelphia high school, the Philadelphia School District shrugged off charges of racial violence by calling the attacks “retribution” for an alleged attack by a Vietnamese “gang member.” An investigation revealed that the student — Hao Luu, a Vietnamese immigrant — was no gang member and, in fact, had been attacked himself the prior day. When Luu complained, the District responded by kicking him out of school. Winner, 1st Place, of the Society of Professional Journalist 2010 award for Public Service Journalism.
